If you are self-employed or an independent contractor, you’re not automatically covered by Paid Leave Oregon. This means you are not required to pay into the program and you do not get the benefits. However, you can participate by choosing coverage. If you choose coverage, you will pay into the program the same way as employees — 60% of the contribution rate. Self-employed individuals can choose coverage beginning Jan. 1, 2023, and can apply for leave beginning Sept. 3, 2023.
